Jungle Book Essay 1967 vs modern

The first Jungle book was made in 1967 it was the 19th Disney movie to be made and sadly it was the last film that Walt Disney himself oversaw as he unfortunately passed on during its production. It is also the first Disney animated Film where the opening credits say who voiced each role. The animation appears a bit outdated, but the age does not detract from the great story Disney had created, or the voice actors who added life to this movie.

The film was directed by Wolfgang Reitherman who also directed other Disney greats such as Peter Pan, The Aristocats and the One Hundred and One Dalmatians. He began working for Disney in 1933 and is considered one of Disney's "Nine Old Men". The total budget for the film was $4,000,000. The film grossed $141,843,612 (USA). The film was shown in countries such as the USA, UK, Germany, and Sweden. The film was most popular in the USA where the film was made. The film has a 7.6 IMDb rating. It is also estimated to be the 29th highest grossing film of all time in the United States.

Wolfgang Reitherman also allowed the actors to create their own representations for their characters allowing the characters to feel more alive and real as well as giving them more personality this was a partial reason to the success of the original Jungle Book and the generation that watched it as Children.

The film is only 78 minutes long which may be surprising to a modern audience as we are now used to films being closer to 2 hours onwards. This may be partly to production costs and cinema running availability as the film would have only been shown in the cinemas at first as any people did not have televisions yet so producing VCRs and DVDs was pointless. The Jungle Book was released in the United States on VHS in 1991 as part of the Walt Disney Classics line and in the United Kingdom in 1993. Home video sales outside North America totalled 14.8 million units by 1994. The film was later released on DVD and Blu-ray for further audience consumption. It is now a widely accessible film on platforms such as Netflix and Sky, it is also one of the many available films that can be accessed by illegal internet streaming. In terms of marketing, the Jungle Book (1967) did not include much marketing other than movie posters and cinema signs due to the lack of internet and social media which we have nowadays. Yet as there was not much competition, especially in the animation industry, the film was extremely popular as it was for all the family to watch and Disney was already an extremely popular household name like it still is today.

Disney’s live action remake of the film in 2016 which had the goal of making a more modern and updated version of the successful family favourite which targeted a different audience, the newer film seems to have a darker theme and as such I believe that it was targeted at the generation who grew up watching the Animated Jungle book and for the newer young adults and teenagers. It was directed by Jon Favreau who is known for producing the Iron Man film series that is popular with this age groups creating further incentive for young adults and teens to watch the film.

It is hard to judge which film was more successful due to the difference in media in time, as it was hard to access the original in 1967 but it is much easier to access and market now. Marketing for this film was much easier as there is now social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook, twitter etc to promote the film and with help from the internet spreading the word is much easier in comparison to 1967. The production company held a fan event where sneak peeks were spread and some of the actors were introduced too, they also had many teaser trailers and trailers to get fans excited ready for the release of the film. The Disney parks also got involved in marketing the film as they had sand models of characters from the film in 'Animal Kingdom' (one of the Disney Theme Parks). This then got people to share pictures of this on social media sites which resulted in word-of-mouth marketing.

The newer film also pays homage to the older one. This is shown with how both films start at with the shot of Mogli holding his forehead against a wolf this is one of many intertextual links between the two films. There is also poster for both films that have similar layouts with both emitting a yellow-gold light form the middle of the image and with the characters placed on the sides, however there is a clear difference in how the characters are presented as in the 1967 poster Shere Khan being more friendly and ‘cartoony’ this contrast to the newer poster where he is placed in a more protective ready to pounce position making him seem more fierce.

Forbrydelsen EP1 Day1 Scene 1 analysis

The show opens with a young woman we later learn is called Nanna running, this is stereotypical of the thriller genre, the clip also shows the victim as a teenage younger girl who is presented as isolated and venerable, their is also a Synthesized Drum beat that is quite quick paced almost matching the victims running tempo. The Scene starts with a low level following shot of her feet as she runs from her pursuer. The location is in a dark forest that creates a typical horror theme with a light being shown behind the girl. The ASL is fast and crosscuts between the victim and the murderer who is presented as an ambiguous figure with more measured menacing movements, we can only identify the murderer as wearing a hooded jacket that is black. The then stumbles through the forest into a waterway that she stumbles to get out of, this creates the feeling of panic, that showcases the diegetic sounds that match her movements creating a more realistic feeling scene. She then reaches a tree leaning on it for support where we get an extreme close up shot of her illuminated by the plane that shows her face as hurt and panicked, the plane shows the more urban outskirts setting and allows for a better transfer to the city and creates a brief moment of relief as she realizes where she is however it also has exposed her to the pursuer, then she begins to move again and is illuminated by the pursuers torch again allowing the reveal of her white under cloth allowing for the victim to seem innocent and young, this dress is visibly ripped showing her danger almost as if her the purity is threatened by the black clothed man, this is furthered by the fact that black can connote bad (Barthes Theory), and the in modern media black usually is associated with the bad guys. The scene ends with the girl begging to turn away from the pursuer. The creators then use a sound bridge to zoom out and show the forest and urban edges of the area to then link to the next scene.

How Forbrydelsen represents Danish culture and Social concerns, How far dose Forbrydelsen adhere to expected conventions:

The showing of Sarah Lund at the start of the next scene wakes up early worried showing the flaws of her personal life this is a convention of the Police Thriller Genre showing it adhering to the genre, the show then presents the importance of family to the Danish, this is shown with the way that Sarah walks in on her clearly teenage sleeping son with the TV left on, adhering to the typical teenage image of more care less as he seems to not have packed much adhering to that convention, Sarah is shown to smile, showing her love, this is continued by the showcasing of her boyfriend as a loving man who offers to put them some coffee on, their is also a remark about Sarah the Dane being exited to become a Swede, to which she responds with never showing the slight cultural rivalry between both nations. The bridge between the next scene however shows Sarah turning up at work where she is pranked by her colleges, this shows the parody of a crime as it is more funny, the blow up doll can foreshadow the themes of the story as possibly sexual. who give her a typical Swedish headpiece which she wears this is a friendly tease at the Swedish culture from the Danes. Their is then a transition that shows the Working man and then Lars is introduced and Sarah shows him around, he is quite Nobel with how he wants to protect the possible prostitute of the scene only to be put down by Sarah almost implying that the possible prostitute isn't worth as much effort to ensure she is fine as well as defying the stereotype that a woman would care more for the proustite than than the man showing the male dominated police forces almost jarring as if she is jarred against it. Theis who seems to be the boss of a moving company, his employee knocks over a glass ornament which he refuses to apologies for, Theis is then shown to negotiate for the employee and then the employee calls the man a Paki and refuses to pay Theis then says he will knock it of the bill and says tells his employee-Van to clean it up, this shows a cultural dislike for the Muslim culture. Theis' wife then calls with panic creating a convention that is false as it is the Dishwasher that has broken. This sequence shows the wife as panicked but also intelligent as she says to Theis to get the Plummer which he refutes and try's to fix it only to break it again, The bigger Theis is set up as a possible murderer as it shows him fooling around with him pushing his wife to the floor and the camera showing an image of Nanna the murder victim at the end this makes the watcher believe that Theis is a possible murderer.

Very good quality, however there is too much information and it almost summarizes the entire scenes, Nevertheless you have written about a lot of conventions. In future try and link it back to some theorists

How dose Forbrydelsen adhere to expected conventions?

Theis and his wife Pernille are shown as equal business partners at first but as the day develops the writers show a more traditional husband wife relationship this is shown in the line that Theis says to Pernille "I'll find her and bring her home" this shows the fact that Theis is more dominant and Pernille is staying at home even though she is willing to go look for Nanna. This is Judith Butler theory that gender should be a fluid variable that can change based on the situation and circumstance. Cultural Social context showing that this is an expected behavior of the family, this shows Lisa as more fluid and becoming a more modern fluid representation. In support of Butlers Theory Nanna was a very typical example of the groups, whereas Lund is shifting between the roles with family and work. This shifting of perceived gender defies the genre conventions as most Crime Dramas have a dominant Male protagonist or presence.

Sarah is shown as emotionless and not hugely empathetic to case or the victims only showing a brief sense of empathy for Theis, this is shown in a series of close-up shots of Sarah walking up to a distressed Theis and confirming his fear with a smaller nod, the camera then focuses on Sarah's emotionless expression then her eyes slowly dilate showing a brief moment of remorse. This opposes the genera as women are expected to be more emotional and worried like how Pernille is shown to need Theis for support in her worry and more emotional when hearing the news as well as the lack of emotion making her seem more invested which is also a convention of the detective caring more about the case and solving it more than helping the family recover. This is useful to the writer as it shows the detective dedication to the case and how they are professional.

Another way that Forbrydelsen adheres to genre conventions is through the representation of Theis as disliking Oliver Nanna’s ex-boyfriend, he is described as a Bastard by Theis and he is dismissive of Oliver when he goes to Oliver’s’ parents house and Oliver insist that Nanna is not there, making Theis apologies and begin to worry more than in the past. This is adhering to the conventions of Fathers not liking their daughter’s boyfriend and also saying that adults can be dismissive of the younger generations even when they are shown to be correct or have no reason to doubt them creating a situation where Theis is worried and also shown to be more worried.

Intertextuality and Stranger Things

The Intertextual scenes used in Stranger Things represents the common stereotypes of 1980s small-town America this is shown with the Spielbergian ideologies. The series of Stranger Things has a large showcase on the weaponised intertextuality in the show.

In E.T. and Stranger Tings their are many scenes, for example both the families of E.T. and Stranger Things have similar structures with a single mother trying to keep her family fed and two sons one who is older than the other. Their are also many themes that Stranger Things and E.T. have in common, with both Eleven and E.T. being hidden away form society and how the main cast are children and share in scenes where they escape Government Agencies who are in vans with the main cast on bicycles and their is also a link between E.T. and Stranger Things with both Eleven and E.T. showcasing a unknown power.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Stranger things also showcase intertextuality with both having scenes where the communication with the alienated member of the main cast being done with flashing/ blinking lights.

                                Stranger Things

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Stranger Things is also clearly influenced by the scene in The Shining of Joyce two handing an axe is clearly an inspiration for the scene in Stranger Things, this is furthered by the presentation of Stranger Things in a more Steven King inspired setting.

Task 1: Forbrydelsen & Stranger Things

The fandom in Forbrydelsen can be shown with the fandom that surrounds Sarah Lund, this is shown with when the producers released a Jumper that she wore and it quickly became out of stock, the Jumper worn by Sophie Garbol was not particularly fashionable and designed by the producers to show Sarah Lund's confidence in herself. This sticking point caused the jumper to be a prop that the fanbase began to identify with and want to imitate.

The Jumper in Question

The fandom of Stranger Things is similarly large and dedicated this can be shown by the huge amounts of fanart that can be found on google with the simple search of' Stranger Things fanart'.

Search Results

This level of quality work done by the Fanbase of Stranger Things shows their dedication and the effort of this work shows that the fanbase has invested significant time into the creation of the work. The work mostly showcases the main characters showing them as a focus of the fanbases love of the franchise. This is particularly apparent with the characters of Eleven played by Millie Bobby Brown and the other male lead roles, Will, Mike Wheeler, Dustin and Lucas.

Joyce Buyers, Mike Wheeler, Eleven, Dustin Henderson and Lucas Sinclair

The appeal of Stranger Things was targeted at a new audience who would have never seen the 1980s, this lenses and take on the story appeals to a modern audience as it allows the audience to use their cultural capital, for younger audiences  this creates a more nostalgic seeming simpler view on the past  that makes the viewer long for its return.
The show uses subtle intertextuality with the 1980s simple street start this plays on the viewers nostalgia of other films allowing an association in their mind.

Marketing of the Jungle Books

Favreau introduced the film in teaser trailers at popular events and released still images from the film to give an insight of the film. In order to appeal to a variety of audiences through the trailer, they chose to use the example of ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ instead of other popular films like Cinderella from example. This appeals more to male audiences. A Jon Favreau also deliberately wanted the animals to seem more HD and less animated so it would seem more suitable for older people.

In 1967 and 2016 Disney released different trailers, with 1967 trailer was animated and was impressive for the generation of tech it was released in however the quality of the trailer from modern day assessment dose not hold up well. The newer jungle book trailer has made the film seem darker and successfully shrugged the image of a child's film away from the production, this has allowed Disney to create a mores suspenseful film than the 1967 one. The 1967 trailer has a more upbeat tone making it appeal more to a younger audience. The 2016 trailer is less appealing to children, but dose appeal to the older audience who watched the original jungle book. Due to this, the story is being portrayed as a more intense and brutal film.

Radio Case Studies Notes

Radio One, Two & Three are funded by the Government and as such they must meets the set criteria these are, they must reach a required amount of people, they must endorse new British talent, they must be broadcasted on a FM radio and they cannot include government propaganda/ their free to criticize of praise.

Radio one is aimed at under 30s and promotes young artists with the tracks that are played on the radio with a committee voting on the differing amounts with the A tracks 25 times a week B 15 times and  5-10 times, this gives the new producers time to get their music out their. Radio One also has a tendency to keep the played music more aimed at the younger generation.

Radio one also uses more collectivist and across the table talking, this makes the listener feel more involved with the radio as well as them using a more upbeat and charismatic presenter that can connect to the youth listeners, the language used like 'What's going on? Loads of things' and 'I'm here with you everyday'.

This sense of comradery is also created by the use of David Attenborough as a more farther like figure that creates a bond. This is all alluring to the younger generation. The radio also frequently contacts the community and listens to what they say. This is paired with the use of generational slang like 'if you work 5 days you're a legend' this creates a sense that Greg James is a friend not a radio presenter.

Radio one also creates a sense of sarcasm around the older generation with a more chatty and millennial response to the elderly and posher members of the community. The use of younger interviewees like the one of a younger teacher this creates connections with the listener. They also play more classical versions of modern pop songs. They also use a more posh mocking tone when referring t o 'social distancing'.

Radio two is aimed at over 30s with a more sophisticated presenter and a focuses on older and more classical music this is to engage the older societal members with the radio being more news and music focused with less community focused vocabulary.

Radio three is more nice and primarily focuses on the news and audio books this is exceedingly nice and is popular with older audiences. This allows all societal members to tune into a audiobook or news broadcast while doing their daily commute.

Research: Conventions of a Front Cover

The masthead is simple and San Serif but the page also features serif font. The serif font is used on the smaller words and the Sans Serif is used to place emphasis on the main words that communicate the point of the article's stand first.

Cara Delevingne is placed in the centre of the image as a Mid Shot type, this is a common convention.

The Background is simple so the text is clearly visible.

The Bar code is used commonly as well as a edition number and date of production.

For the contents page their is often another image of the character on the front cover, it is also usually a  mid shot.

The page numbers and features are usually on the top and right side

The Evolution of Music Videos Over Time

Music Videos like any form of media have evolved over time with the original videos like the song Bohemian Rhaspody by Queen in 1975 that focused on the Performance of the Artists with their faces in a close up this is very down to earth and focuses on showcasing the Artists and promoting them.

In the music video Video Killed the Radio Star that was released in 1980 this video shows a Performance from the Artists behind the song while also having the Concept that technology will kill the Radio, the video features the science fiction genre which was popular at the time with the video being against the rapid technological upgrades of the time.

In the music video for Material Girl from 1984 by Madonna the video shows a Narrative with the poor man in the back asking the Material Girl out and Him getting that girl. The video is also a performance with Madonna being shown as a desirable girl that everyone was trying to get with presents, however the girl shown is not as hollow as that. The Narrative and Performance of the video contrast with each other by showing Madonna as hollow and Material focused with her eventually being won over by the simple cheap flowers.

The music video by A Beautiful South called A Little Time made in 1990 was presented as a Narrative Performance with the Narrative coming in with the fight that had taken place prior to the filming of the video but also with how the woman chooses to end the relationship, this is not typical for the time showing the evolution of the story, it is shown through short clips that are joined by cuts to make the video hole.

The progression of the music video is shown in the Video released by the Backstreet Boys in 1999 called I Want It That Way, the video shows mainly a performance, this is shown with the frequent showing of the boyband and the frequent close ups of the band's members as individuals. It shows the creation of the boyband and is targeted at the younger female teens as they will be more interested in the members.

The progression of music videos is shown the most clearly in the video by Lady Gaga called Telephone made in 2009, this is the start of an active audience with the fledging internet. The video is a Narrative video with a performance that starts 2:54 into the 9:30 video, it also showcases Concepts. The video features lots of intertextuality with many references to pop culture. The video also features the main point of sexuality and it makes a statement that women are smarter then they are shown as and are also shown as more violent.

The progression of media videos is shown in the music video titled Where is the Love by The Black Eyed Peas with the video showing a Narrative, Performance, Concept. The performance of the video is shown in the R&B close ups with lots of hand Gestures. The Narrative shows a group that is going round questioning everything in they see by sticking ? stickers on everything. The Concept is shown with the video referencing many forms of media with posters promoting GTA a racist video game. The narrative of the video shows the feeling that the minority culture is often the victim of discrimination with there often being close ups on black people next to police or running from the officers. The use of children to sing the background tune of Where is the Love? makes the listener think is this really the world they will grow up in and they as a result of this will make the video seem more real and intense. The media is also shown as discriminatory with the lyrics of the song linking up with the images of the media shown.

Fun with Font Types

Fonts can result in a change in the overall feel of a media outlet with a sans serif font being more professional and clean with its overall look. However a sans font will have more curls and in general be more ascetically pleasing with there look also they can show a older font type or a flowing font.

With the Courier font sans serif font type the font makes the reader imagine a typewriter and gives off a more straight to the point look.

However when the Sans font type in the image is used it makes the reader feel like this document is more official and traditional.

The more curled form of the Sans font type is often more difficult to read and not used commonly as of late this is also an more fluent type of text with a flowing joinment.

Historical and Cultural Context in Media

This is a poster that shows the beetles band crossing a road. The image features the traditional London cars. The Historical Context of this poster shows the ideal street of the time with a simple bold san seraph text in the top right hand corner. It also features the band in more recognisable clothing of the era. It also shows the stereotypical boy band. It also shows the slight movement of the time for a more green way of life with the trees.

The poster shows the divide of the rich and poor in the United Kingdom with the left side of the street having more high end housing and with the band choosing to be in the middle of the street this can show them trying to cater for both the groups in their fanbase. However, the way they are walking towards the right shows there leaning towards the poorer peoples.

This Polish poster shows the polish culture with the view of the Palace of Culture and Science located in the mans head. This shows the polish culture with the famous polish building in Warsaw. The man in the suit shows the polish workers that have immigrated and are seen as hard workers.
The caption dwaj lndzie z miasta which translates to two people from the city. This can link with the polish acquirements of much of eastern Germany at the end of the 2nd World War, with the link being formed by the fact there was a sudden change of many ethnic Germanic peoples living in a polish state, this has lead to some issues with the people in these areas identifying with the polish culture group or the Germanic culture group.

Analysing Front covers of Magazines

The Shot type is a Mid Shot that still allows for an impression of the point while not showing the full image.
The White background makes the black trousers pop out more
The image places an emphasis on the males strength by having the muscles stand out more appealing to the male stereotype
The mas head covers the magazines brand name moving into the stereotype that men brake boundaries
The Simplicity of the cover shows that men are more simple and contempt as well as showing how sophisticated men are supposed to be.
The words on the cover such as 'Tough Treadmill Sessions' and 'Transforming your training' shows the male stereotype of him being more focused on the strength.

Discussing Stereotypes.

Codes & Conventions of Magazine Font Covers

Need to label the Horrible History's and 1975 magazine front covers like I have done for the images above.

Horrible History's

.The Simplicity of the magazine can appeal to younger people and the cartoony ness of the images helps to make the writing on the front pop out more.

.The red text really stands out on the blue background helping younger audiences to see the work.

.The choice of the colour blue helps to show that the magazine targets boys over girls.

.The lack of text shows a simplicity that is sophisticated.

.The price is clearly shown on the front cover for the ease of the individual.

.The way some text is laid out shows that it is a word spoken by the cartoon characters on the front cover.

.The hat of the male cartoon covers part of the magazines title placing a emphasis on the characters.

.The White and red theme of the righting on the top of the character draws attention to the title.

In Deep With the 1975

.The magazine features a picture of a famous band that the magazine calls the band of the decade.

.'The 50 worst decisions in modern music' is a selling line.

.'The band of the decade gets the bends' is a selling line.

.The magazine shows the picture of the boys hugging in the front and centre, this shows the target audience to be teens and this also inquires intrigue to those who see the front cover.

.The magazine is targeted towards younger adults as the text is more chatty and casual with stories like 'This is worse than the Dentist'.
