Radio Case Studies Notes

Radio One, Two & Three are funded by the Government and as such they must meets the set criteria these are, they must reach a required amount of people, they must endorse new British talent, they must be broadcasted on a FM radio and they cannot include government propaganda/ their free to criticize of praise.

Radio one is aimed at under 30s and promotes young artists with the tracks that are played on the radio with a committee voting on the differing amounts with the A tracks 25 times a week B 15 times and  5-10 times, this gives the new producers time to get their music out their. Radio One also has a tendency to keep the played music more aimed at the younger generation.

Radio one also uses more collectivist and across the table talking, this makes the listener feel more involved with the radio as well as them using a more upbeat and charismatic presenter that can connect to the youth listeners, the language used like 'What's going on? Loads of things' and 'I'm here with you everyday'.

This sense of comradery is also created by the use of David Attenborough as a more farther like figure that creates a bond. This is all alluring to the younger generation. The radio also frequently contacts the community and listens to what they say. This is paired with the use of generational slang like 'if you work 5 days you're a legend' this creates a sense that Greg James is a friend not a radio presenter.

Radio one also creates a sense of sarcasm around the older generation with a more chatty and millennial response to the elderly and posher members of the community. The use of younger interviewees like the one of a younger teacher this creates connections with the listener. They also play more classical versions of modern pop songs. They also use a more posh mocking tone when referring t o 'social distancing'.

Radio two is aimed at over 30s with a more sophisticated presenter and a focuses on older and more classical music this is to engage the older societal members with the radio being more news and music focused with less community focused vocabulary.

Radio three is more nice and primarily focuses on the news and audio books this is exceedingly nice and is popular with older audiences. This allows all societal members to tune into a audiobook or news broadcast while doing their daily commute.

Research: Conventions of a Front Cover

The masthead is simple and San Serif but the page also features serif font. The serif font is used on the smaller words and the Sans Serif is used to place emphasis on the main words that communicate the point of the article's stand first.

Cara Delevingne is placed in the centre of the image as a Mid Shot type, this is a common convention.

The Background is simple so the text is clearly visible.

The Bar code is used commonly as well as a edition number and date of production.

For the contents page their is often another image of the character on the front cover, it is also usually a  mid shot.

The page numbers and features are usually on the top and right side

The Evolution of Music Videos Over Time

Music Videos like any form of media have evolved over time with the original videos like the song Bohemian Rhaspody by Queen in 1975 that focused on the Performance of the Artists with their faces in a close up this is very down to earth and focuses on showcasing the Artists and promoting them.

In the music video Video Killed the Radio Star that was released in 1980 this video shows a Performance from the Artists behind the song while also having the Concept that technology will kill the Radio, the video features the science fiction genre which was popular at the time with the video being against the rapid technological upgrades of the time.

In the music video for Material Girl from 1984 by Madonna the video shows a Narrative with the poor man in the back asking the Material Girl out and Him getting that girl. The video is also a performance with Madonna being shown as a desirable girl that everyone was trying to get with presents, however the girl shown is not as hollow as that. The Narrative and Performance of the video contrast with each other by showing Madonna as hollow and Material focused with her eventually being won over by the simple cheap flowers.

The music video by A Beautiful South called A Little Time made in 1990 was presented as a Narrative Performance with the Narrative coming in with the fight that had taken place prior to the filming of the video but also with how the woman chooses to end the relationship, this is not typical for the time showing the evolution of the story, it is shown through short clips that are joined by cuts to make the video hole.

The progression of the music video is shown in the Video released by the Backstreet Boys in 1999 called I Want It That Way, the video shows mainly a performance, this is shown with the frequent showing of the boyband and the frequent close ups of the band's members as individuals. It shows the creation of the boyband and is targeted at the younger female teens as they will be more interested in the members.

The progression of music videos is shown the most clearly in the video by Lady Gaga called Telephone made in 2009, this is the start of an active audience with the fledging internet. The video is a Narrative video with a performance that starts 2:54 into the 9:30 video, it also showcases Concepts. The video features lots of intertextuality with many references to pop culture. The video also features the main point of sexuality and it makes a statement that women are smarter then they are shown as and are also shown as more violent.

The progression of media videos is shown in the music video titled Where is the Love by The Black Eyed Peas with the video showing a Narrative, Performance, Concept. The performance of the video is shown in the R&B close ups with lots of hand Gestures. The Narrative shows a group that is going round questioning everything in they see by sticking ? stickers on everything. The Concept is shown with the video referencing many forms of media with posters promoting GTA a racist video game. The narrative of the video shows the feeling that the minority culture is often the victim of discrimination with there often being close ups on black people next to police or running from the officers. The use of children to sing the background tune of Where is the Love? makes the listener think is this really the world they will grow up in and they as a result of this will make the video seem more real and intense. The media is also shown as discriminatory with the lyrics of the song linking up with the images of the media shown.

Fun with Font Types

Fonts can result in a change in the overall feel of a media outlet with a sans serif font being more professional and clean with its overall look. However a sans font will have more curls and in general be more ascetically pleasing with there look also they can show a older font type or a flowing font.

With the Courier font sans serif font type the font makes the reader imagine a typewriter and gives off a more straight to the point look.

However when the Sans font type in the image is used it makes the reader feel like this document is more official and traditional.

The more curled form of the Sans font type is often more difficult to read and not used commonly as of late this is also an more fluent type of text with a flowing joinment.

Historical and Cultural Context in Media

This is a poster that shows the beetles band crossing a road. The image features the traditional London cars. The Historical Context of this poster shows the ideal street of the time with a simple bold san seraph text in the top right hand corner. It also features the band in more recognisable clothing of the era. It also shows the stereotypical boy band. It also shows the slight movement of the time for a more green way of life with the trees.

The poster shows the divide of the rich and poor in the United Kingdom with the left side of the street having more high end housing and with the band choosing to be in the middle of the street this can show them trying to cater for both the groups in their fanbase. However, the way they are walking towards the right shows there leaning towards the poorer peoples.

This Polish poster shows the polish culture with the view of the Palace of Culture and Science located in the mans head. This shows the polish culture with the famous polish building in Warsaw. The man in the suit shows the polish workers that have immigrated and are seen as hard workers.
The caption dwaj lndzie z miasta which translates to two people from the city. This can link with the polish acquirements of much of eastern Germany at the end of the 2nd World War, with the link being formed by the fact there was a sudden change of many ethnic Germanic peoples living in a polish state, this has lead to some issues with the people in these areas identifying with the polish culture group or the Germanic culture group.

Analysing Front covers of Magazines

The Shot type is a Mid Shot that still allows for an impression of the point while not showing the full image.
The White background makes the black trousers pop out more
The image places an emphasis on the males strength by having the muscles stand out more appealing to the male stereotype
The mas head covers the magazines brand name moving into the stereotype that men brake boundaries
The Simplicity of the cover shows that men are more simple and contempt as well as showing how sophisticated men are supposed to be.
The words on the cover such as 'Tough Treadmill Sessions' and 'Transforming your training' shows the male stereotype of him being more focused on the strength.

Discussing Stereotypes.

The Dark background of this picture shows the negative light cast on elderly people.
The woman being alone shows the believe that elderly people are lonely
The wallpaper shows the fact they are out of tune

The man wears a suit showing the believe that they are all smart

The man is facing the shot at a angle showing how he is different and independant from the rest

The strong facial expression without emotion shows men as less sensitive and stronger

The women are happy showing how they are perceived to be over the top

They are very enthusiastic showing how they are strong

They are the centre figures in a very focused picture showing the believe that they are the minority

The black clothes of their religion show then in a negative light
There face coverings give the illusion of a shifty composition
The limited amount of skin shows them as almost sub human

The surprise shows poorer people in a less intelligent light

The background graffiti shows how people see them as lawless

The general roughness of the clothing shows the feeling of poverty and lack of caring

He is clearly more self aware and smart

The clean background shows them as civilised

Codes & Conventions of Magazine Font Covers

Need to label the Horrible History's and 1975 magazine front covers like I have done for the images above.

Horrible History's

.The Simplicity of the magazine can appeal to younger people and the cartoony ness of the images helps to make the writing on the front pop out more.

.The red text really stands out on the blue background helping younger audiences to see the work.

.The choice of the colour blue helps to show that the magazine targets boys over girls.

.The lack of text shows a simplicity that is sophisticated.

.The price is clearly shown on the front cover for the ease of the individual.

.The way some text is laid out shows that it is a word spoken by the cartoon characters on the front cover.

.The hat of the male cartoon covers part of the magazines title placing a emphasis on the characters.

.The White and red theme of the righting on the top of the character draws attention to the title.

In Deep With the 1975

.The magazine features a picture of a famous band that the magazine calls the band of the decade.

.'The 50 worst decisions in modern music' is a selling line.

.'The band of the decade gets the bends' is a selling line.

.The magazine shows the picture of the boys hugging in the front and centre, this shows the target audience to be teens and this also inquires intrigue to those who see the front cover.

.The magazine is targeted towards younger adults as the text is more chatty and casual with stories like 'This is worse than the Dentist'.
